How to tell whether you need professional design help

Imagine this. You’re the owner of a retail business that’s suddenly hit with mandatory pandemic protocols. So, you must communicate a set of (ever evolving) rules to your customers. Quickly.

All you have on hand are:

  • a few pieces of paper

  • duct tape

  • a permanent marker

  • your phone

What do you do?

A. Scrawl the rules on a handmade sign and post them in your front entrance

B. Hire a designer

C. Drop everything and panic buy toilet paper

The correct answer is B. Hire a designer.

You may be wondering how I arrived at that decision. Well, I’ll show you through a series of questions.

If you answer yes to any of them—whether or not you actually are the owner of a business—you likely need design help. And soon.

Four questions to ponder

  1. Do you need to communicate a message visually? Let’s continue with the retail example mentioned above. You, the owner, need to display new rules on your storefront. You decide a sign will fulfill that purpose. Great! But do you know the most readable font to use on a 8×11-inch sheet of paper? And what size of font? How about graphics? What shapes and images will best showcase your information? You’ve got a business to run. Don’t feel forced to take on visual communication work too.
  2. Do you have a nagging marketing problem and absolutely no time to solve it? Good designers are highly skilled researchers and problem solvers. So hit us with your head-scratchers. We’ll address your business goals while making sure your brand looks fresh and profesh every step of the way. So you can put down that duct tape and permanent marker and get back to your regularly scheduled programming.
  3. Does the thought of learning to use design software make you want to change careers? Designers looove technology, and we use several tools to develop and finesse our creations daily. So if this isn’t your bag, that’s fine! Leave the tech to us. It’ll be quicker and easier on you in the long run.
  4. Is your company growing? Please, please, please remember the benefits of good design, even when your business is doing well. Getting design help will keep your brand visually consistent which will, in turn, maintain customer loyalty. Or if your company is evolving enough to require a full-fledged rebrand, you’ll need a designer to handle that while you keep the profits rolling in.

If you bobbed your head to at least one of those questions and you’ve never hired a graphic designer before, I can help. Contact me with your hopes, ideas and questions.
